Balanced Literacy for all: Guided Reading Resources

This is a very quick blog post to let you know that I have recently added a bunch of new resources about Guided Reading onto a new Guided Reading page on my website. (Edited: This is now renamed comprehension instruction)

Guided Reading: Learners with Complex Communication Needs

(edited to add: these resources are very outdated and are no longer available)

These are some old resources from my previous website that have been uploaded again by request! These are guided reading packs for use with students with complex communication needs who don't yet have a comprehensive communication system.

Guided Reading: Focus on Science

These are some new resources developed in conjunction with staff at Adelaide West Special Education Centre.  There is a unit on living things, demonstrating how we can provide content for emergent and early conventional readers and writers that covers different curriculum areas but still has a focus on literacy - so that they can develop literacy understandings and learning throughout the whole school day.  The unit uses two easy-to-read books from Tar Heel Reader as a basis.

(And if you are interested in hear more about how Adelaide West has been implementing the Australian Curriculum you can hear more about this from Lorna Fenech at the Inclusive Learning Technologies Conference on the Gold Coast next week.)

Guided Reading: Focus on Maths

These are also new resources developed in conjunction with staff at Adelaide West Special Education Centre.  These are a range of guided reading and writing purposes for books that can be used in the mathematics curriculum.  Like the previous resources, these aim to demonstrate how we can cover different curriculum areas but still provide a focus on literacy throughout the school day for emergent and early conventional readers and writers.

We hope you enjoy using these resources and find them helpful - and a big thank-you to Adelaide West for agreeing to share their work 🙂
